Abstract

The article examines the major challenges faced by applied linguistics under the conditions of rapid digitalization. The study focuses on the transformation of language practices in digital communication, the growing role of natural language processing, the imbalance between technologically dominant and low-resource languages, and the methodological difficulties of interpreting large-scale textual data. Special attention is given to the risks of semantic simplification, algorithmic bias, fragmentation of discourse norms, and the unstable balance between linguistic diversity and platform standardization. The paper argues that contemporary applied linguistics must expand beyond its traditional descriptive and pedagogical functions and become an integrative field connecting language theory, computational methods, ethics, and digital policy. It is concluded that the future development of applied linguistics depends on the creation of linguistically responsible digital tools, context-sensitive analytical models, and research strategies that protect both communicative efficiency and cultural plurality.
