EFFECT OF HIGH-DOSE GLUCOCORTICOID PULSE THERAPY ON CARBOHYDRATE AND LIPID METABOLISM PARAMETERS IN PATIENTS WITH ENDOCRINE OPHTHALMOPATHY

Abstract










Intravenous glucocorticoid pulse therapy is the standard treatment for active endocrine ophthalmopathy (Bartalena et al., 2021; Kahaly et al., 2022). However, high-dose methylprednisolone administration is associated with pronounced metabolic effects, including the development of insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and disturbances in lipid metabolism (Fardet et al., 2019; van Raalte et al., 2020). Assessing these effects in patients with thyrotoxicosis is of particular interest, as impaired carbohydrate metabolism and increased insulin resistance are already present at baseline (Mullur et al., 2014; Biondi et al., 2019). Nevertheless, the short-term metabolic risks of glucocorticoid pulse therapy in patients with endocrine ophthalmopathy remain insufficiently studied and require further investigation (Bartalena et al., 2021; Kahaly et al., 2022).
