Relationship between clinical-laboratory parameters and parathyroid adenoma size in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism

Abstract
Primary hyperparathyroidism is one of the most common causes of hypercalcemia and, in most cases, is associated with a parathyroid adenoma. The size of the adenoma may reflect the degree of hormonal activity and influence postoperative laboratory dynamics.The mean age of the patients was 46.2±13.8 years. Women accounted for 81.4% of the cases. The mean preoperative parathyroid hormone level was 812.5±694.3 pg/mL, while the mean total calcium level was 2.71±0.41 mmol/L. According to ultrasonographic findings, the mean maximum adenoma size was 31.8±12.4 mm. Larger parathyroid adenomas were associated with more pronounced biochemical manifestations of primary hyperparathyroidism, indicating a possible relationship between adenoma size and hormonal activity. Assessment of adenoma dimensions may provide additional prognostic value in the preoperative evaluation of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.
