Abstract
This article explores the historical development of libraries, their evolution, and the role of modern librarianship in society. Initially, libraries served only rulers and elites, but over time public libraries emerged as an important source of knowledge for the wider population. Librarianship has evolved from the work of simple “book keepers” into a multifaceted profession requiring a broad range of knowledge and skills. The article highlights the modern librarian’s roles as an information intermediary, promoter of cultural values, psychological supporter, and technical specialist. It also analyzes the key competencies required for the profession, including communication, psychology, design, information technology, and basic medical knowledge. Finally, practical recommendations are proposed to enhance the prestige and social significance of libraries and the library profession.
